Even though similar pictures and videos of a large crowd gathered around a water tanker have emerged this year as well, the image shared by Vijay Goel is an old one.
A video of a mob thrashing a man is getting viral on social media. AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan shared the video on his official Twitter handle and wrote, "In the new India, new records are being set in this way. If your humanity is alive, you will be sad to see this. Like every other occasion, a man wearing a ”skull cap, kurta and sporting beard” will be the victim of savagery. Though the BJP government has been incapable of providing development, they are foremost in spreading hatred. Sad!”
In our investigation, we found that the viral claim is misleading and there is no communal angle.
After doing research on Google, we found a report published by Marathi media outlet Lokmat on June 15 which reported that the van dragged the two-wheeler for 3 km. Mahendra Bapurao Basavathe from Washim district lives in Ward no. 2 in Gurudevnagar, had parked his two-wheeler outside his house.
After hitting the two-wheeler, the drunk driver did not stop his vehicle and in front of many people, the driver Mohammad Faizan sped away with the two-wheeler for a distance of three kilometers. Hundreds of residents were shocked to see the scene and citizens tried to stop the driver. However, the driver did not stop and rushed towards the national highway. People who witnessed the van dragging his bike chased and caught Faizan and beat him. He was handed over to the police later.
According to Maharashtra Times, police have arrested the driver and further investigation is underway under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act in Tivasa police station. As per reports, there was no religious motivation for the crowd to attack the driver.
In conclusion, AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan gave a communal spin to a video of a mob in Amravati beating up a van driver following an accident.
